Who said Border Collies only herd sheep? A new and growing franchise by the name of “Geese Police” utilize the Border Collies extraordinary herding ability to herd up Geese that refuse to fly north for the spring. If the geese are left alone they will make permanent year round residence on golf courses and parks. This is when the “Geese Police” are called to action.
Cindy Ranneberger started her career by responding to a newspaper ad:
“A little ad that said, `Do you like dogs? Would you like to work outside and do you like to kayak?’ And so I told my husband, `Oh, my God, it’s like my name’s written in the paper and I have to do this,’” Ranneberger said.
Every since she has been herding geese, she says that it can take weeks to drive off a flock of geese even with the best trained Border Collies, but she loves every aspect of her job!

I have two border collies and the opportunity for them to work with me as goose chasers. Where can I take them to be trained for this?
Hello Debbie, most people train their Border collie’s by purchasing Geese or via “on the job training” The first step is trusting your collie to be free and to obey commands. Time a repetition is required.
I have an older border collie. His name is Butch. He’s nine years and ten months old. I think he might have some health issues. I have read your health article and I think he may have hip displasia. Sometimes he’s fine but other times he can’t get up, or he’s grumpy or uninterested in things that usually spur excitement, so I worry. I want to make these last few years the best I can for him. What should I do?
I love my buddie. I hope you can help me.
Hello and thank you for your comment. Border collies are prone to hip dysplasia but in some instances it can be avoided by carefully watching the genes of the pups that are breed. Have you taken Butch to the vet? There are many new procedures that can potentially help Butch. If you are looking for something low impact for him, swimming is highly recommended.
